Over one third of the annual UK CO2 emissions comes from business and the public sectors energy use. In May 2007 the UK Government announced its intention to introduce a scheme to reduce the carbon emissions of non energy intensive organisations by 1.2 million tonnes of carbon per year by 2020. This scheme is known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment.
CRC is a mandatory emissions trading scheme aimed at large organisations such as supermarkets and hotel chains with energy consumption in excess of 6000 MWh/year or energy bills in excess of £500k per year.
CRC came into effect during April 2010.
